Snowboarding History

Exact details vary depending on what book you read, but its seems that the humble snowboard first appeared in 1929 when a man named M.J. "Jack" Burchett cut out a plank of plywood and secured it to his feet with a length of clothesline. It was not until the mid sixties however that the modern snowboard began to take shape.

In 1965 Sherman Poppen designed a toy for his young daughter which was to become the "Snurfer," a mixture of "snow” and “surfer," This early board was more or less a skateboard without wheels. The "Snurfer" consisted of 2-skis fastened together with a rope at the front of the skis to hold on to. The idea caught on fast, partly due to the Snurfer competitions Poppen organised and by 1966 Sherman Poppen had sold half a million Snurfers at the price of $15 each. Snow boarding was here to stay.

During the 1970’s the snowboard underwent a number of refinements as pioneers like Tom Sims, Demetrije Milovich and Jake Burton developed and new board designs as the popularity of snowboarding grew.

Demetrije Milovich an east coast surfer had the idea of sliding on cafeteria trays upstate New York. From this he started developing his snowboards designs and in 1972 he started a company called the Winterstick. By 1975 The Winterstick was getting mentioned in Newsweek magazine. The winterstick was based on the design and feel of a surfboard but worked the same way as skis.

In 1977 Jake Burton a carpenter, after completing university moved to Vermont and needing to make earn money started to produce snowboards made with steam bent wood laminated wood and fiberglass. He later surprised everyone by winning a Snurfer competition on his own board. Today Burton Snowboards is a major player in the snowboard industry.

At around the same time, former skateboard champion Tom Sims, started to produce snowboards. The same year Bob Webber was also developing his "yellow banana" board made of polyethylene. This was followed the next year by Chuck Barfoot who developed a fiberglass in the snowboard.

By the early 80's a growing number of snowboard brands were arriving on the market, such as Burton, Winterstick, Sims, Barfoot, Avalanche and Gnu.

Many of the early snowboards were very difficult to control and they were banned from many ski areas. 1985 saw only 39, of approximately 600 ski resorts giving access to snowboards. However, equipment and skill levels improved so did access to ski areas. By the early 1990’s most of the major ski areas had separate slopes for snowboarders.

During the mid-eighties, snowboarding acquired a bit of a "bad boy" image. This rebel attitude still lingers today even though snowboarding has a much wider audience profile, crossing gender and age.

In 1998, snowboarding debuted at the Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The event had a giant slalom and halfpipe competition. Rebagliati, a Canadian from Whistler BC, won the gold medal that year, unfortunately he tested positive for trace amounts of marijuana and was stripped of his gold medal. Snowboarding will be part of the 2008 Olympics in Torino, Italy with the addition of snowboard cross event.

In the year 2000, snowboarding was the fastest-growing sport in the United States. Today, more than 3.5 million people snowboard and by 2015 it is predicted that more people will snowboard than ski.

Overview:
The U.S. Snowboarding Race to the Cup series makes two stops this season. Each stop on the tour will consist of two alpine events with $2,000 in prize money at each stop. All races will be scheduled as part of the NorAm series. Domestic athletes must have a current National USSA license and all athletes must have a FIS license prior to registering for the Race to the Cup. There will be no onsite USSA or FIS registration at the event.

Prizes:
U.S. Snowboarding will provide $2,000 of prize money for each stop the tour. Additional prizes from the tour sponsors are given out at each event. Athletes will be ranked on the U.S. Snowboarding website.

Everyone knows about the Burton Custom X. If for some reason you don't it is a stiffer more directional version of the the most well known board the Burton Custom. One of the best qualities about the Custom X is it feels like the board helps to initiate the the next turn for you. It's pretty stiff, fast and fun for tearing up the mountain at high speed. The Custom X is a near perfect competitor to the Rome Anthem and Flag (wide). The difference is the Custom X has Pressure Edge Distribution, Channel Tech, Stainless Steel Edges and the Burton name where the Anthem doesn't. The 2012 Custom X remains very similar to the 2011 and 2010 models in terms of tech and the all around ride.

They did add "Squeeze Box" Tech to the 2012 which helps improve the flex between the feet but to us we didn't notice much of a difference compared to the previous models. We felt a bit of a difference on some other Burton boards but for some reason it seemed almost the same with the Custom X. For some reason we noticed it more on the hybrid rocker/rocker shapes than we did on the Custom but maybe that is because we were riding the Custom and Custom X a little differently than the freestyle boards. We were more interested in carving and higer speeds with these boards.

The Burton Wide SE7EN Snowboard —Trevor Andrew’s freestyle crusher is as rare as a white dude with a grill. This Burton Coalition park-specific snowboard isn’t for scaredy-cats. Whether you’re strapping in above an urban kinker, or getting pumped to huck a monster tabletop in the park, the SE7EN Snowboard has the goods to help you shred metal and stomp sketch landings.

If you can put up with the extremely obnoxious jewelery on the the top sheet and the big ass grill on the base then definitely pick up this stick. You can take this bad boy all over the mountain. More of a park board than anything else, the curved up nose and tail really do help nail those sketchy landings and i have yet to catch an edge on any rail or box. Slows down a bit in the fluffy stuff, but not enough to put you in the back of the pack. Excellent carving action on packed or groomed snow, and even pretty stable on icy days. Snowboy Productions and title sponsor Lib Tech are ready to kick off the 2010-11 winter season in true NW style with the Downtown Throwdown (DTTD) on October 9 in Seattle, WA, from noon to 5pm.

Occidental Park in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square will be covered in 30 tons of snow, rails, barrels, sponsor tents, amped kids, confused tourists, photographers and 25 invited shreds.

“Snowboarding in Seattle…in October…and we’re raising money for theserviceboard.org …it’ll be bananas!” says Lib Tech’s Pete Saari.

In five short years this core grass-roots event has grown into the biggest urban snowboarding event in North America. Rider focused and spectator friendly, it blends progressive snowboarding with an entertaining format that keeps people coming back year after year.

“This rail jam is the premier event of the early season because it doesn’t have the aura of a contest. It really is a family of snowboarders smiling, shredding, and getting the public amped on the season,” says 2009 DTTD winner Nick Visconti.

How to Snowboarding : Air to Fakie. The air to fakie is one of the basics of halfpipe riding, but it is also one of the hardest to do really well. They can be done on either wall, but most people start off with learning them on the frontside wall – although you will be flying blindside (back facing in the direction you are moving), it’s easier to control your takeoff. Start off small with an Indy grab, and as your confidence grows, aim bigger and go for the Melon (backside grab with a forward tweak) – the classic air to fakie style.

Ride towards the frontside wall with as much speed as you feel happy with.
Ride up the wall, weight over your toe edge, gradually becoming flat on your base. It’s important to ride up the wall at the same angle as you would a regular frontside air – don’t go too straight up the wall, you’ll kill your speed.
As you leave the pipe, pop off your tail a little, more if the pipe is under vert.
Reach behind your front foot and grab backside. When you have the grab, bone out your
front leg into the platform.
While you are in the air, You’re basically travelling blindside – keep looking down between
your legs at the coping to stay on track.
Touch down on your toe edge. As soon as you land, quickly turn your head to set up for the
next wall.

How to Snowboarding Frontside 360 : This is the first rotational move to learn in the pipe. It’s easy to do, because you can see where you’re going throughout, and you’re really only rotating 270°. Later, this will be a trick you use to set up for switch moves on the opposite wall, but for now try it as your last hit on the frontside wall.

Snowboarding Trick Frontside 360 Tip :: The key to this trick is to hold the board like a frontside air, but keep your head and shoulders facing further round, ready to pull the last 180.

Snowboarding Trick : Frontside 360 Half Pipe

The first part of this move is done exactly like a regular frontside air.
Ride up the wall, weight over your toe edge, gradually becoming more flat on your base, and focus on the lip.
As you leave the pipe, pop a small ollie, turn your head and shoulders to face down the pipe, a little more than with a regular air.
Grab. Frontside or Mute, however you feel more comfortable, while using the other arm to continue a slow rotation.
Holding the tweak, start looking down at the lip, and get ready for re-entry.
As you re-enter the pipe, quickly swing your tail around to re-enter fakie.
Ride out flat-based, then transfer to your toe-edge, ready to line up for the backside wall... switch.

How to Snowboarding Layback slash : One of the best things about being strapped to your board is the way it allows you to quickly pull surf and skate moves that would take skaters and surfers years to learn.
The perfect example of this is the layback slash: frontside or backside, in the pipe or on a powder windlip, all you need to pull this off is a full tank of gas and some surf flicks playing in your head.

Snowboarding Trick : Layback slash Tip: Use your front foot to guide you through the move, and your back foot to do all the slashing.

Approach the frontside wall on your toeside edge, fast.
As you reach the vert section, lean backwards, and start to go into a heelside turn.
Drop your trailing hand backwards onto the snow, and at the same time push your back foot out in front of you, so that your board is at 90° and you are stretching out ahead of you, on the heel edge.
Tweak out the back leg for extra style. As you feel your speed go, dig in the heel edge and push with your arm to get back up over your board.
Ride back down the transition and switch back onto your toe edge.

How to Snowboarding Backside Air (Method). Like frontside’s, the backside air is a move you learn from day one, and spend the rest of your life refining and pushing. The Method air is basically a backside air with extra tweak – old school, but a timeless expression of style. Christian Hosoi perfected them in the eighties on a skateboard, Jamie Lynn did the same on snow in the nineties...and as soon as you’re getting some

Backside Air (Method) Tip : If the pipe is a bit unpredictable, stay low and relaxed while riding up the wall, you’ll feel the transition better, then stiffen up at the top, ready to pop.

Snowboardng Trick : Backside Air (Method)

Getting the line right in the flat bottom is the key to doing this trick right, so you don’t need to turn once you’re on the transition.
Head up the transition flat on your base, knees bent, with some weight on the heel edge.
If the pipe wall is not steep (under-vert), you need to ollie more off the lip. If it is close to vertical, just ride out without popping.
As the board leaves the lip, lean back a little, lift the nose and let the board come to your hand – don’t go to the board.
Grab the backside edge with your leading hand. I f it feels right, tweak it out by pulling the board in with your hand, and pushing out the back foot.
Spot your landing. Pull your board back in underneath you, release the grab, and extend your legs to meet the top of the transition.
Land flat based with weight over your toe edge, and ride away clean.

How To Snowboarding Droping In, While not a trick as such, dropping in is one thing that has to be mastered before much progress is made: it is the key to understanding transition, and how it can give us extra speed.
There are two ways to ride into a halfpipe – backside or frontside. First to learn is backside, because it’s a) easier, and b) sets you up for a frontside air onyour first hit.

The mistake most riders make is ‘dropping’ when they should be ‘riding’ into the transition.
They jump away from the wall and land with a bump halfway down the transition, which
puts them off balance and kills speed.

Picture in your mind how you’re going to hug the wall of the pipe as you go down, and squeeze speed as you leave.

Select a spot without too much vert or bumps in the transition.
Ride along the lip to build up a little speed, and spot your entry point.
Lean into the pipe and pop a little ollie, pulling your knees up high to enter the pipe
well tucked.
As soon as your weight is fully inside the pipe, extend your legs to meet the pipe wall.
Ride down the wall compact, and as you hit the transition, push with both feet to pump, then, staying on your toe edge, set up for a frontside air.

How To Snowboarding Fronside boardside, Frontside boardslides are THE classic rail trick, reason being they are the simplest, most stylish way to get down a rail, period. As for difficulty... this is one to try when you’re comfortable with boardslides and nose slides.

It’s the sliding position that needs loads of practice – do frontside butters everywhere.

Approach the rail straight on, or slightly from the side, shoulders parallel to the board.
As you reach the take-off, pop a small ollie, and focus on your landing point on the box.
Turn the board backside, aiming to land on the rail at 90°, while keeping your shoulders in line with the rail – basically like a backside shifty.
Land, weight centred over the board, or slightly more on the front foot.
Keep looking down the rail, at the same time tweaking the board in the opposite direction with your feet.
Keeping your head and shoulders facing down the rail will help your balance, and help you ride out clean.
As you leave the rail, counter-rotate your shoulders and hips to ride out facing forwards.

How to Snowboarding Rock to Fakie, this is pretty much the first trick to try on a wall ride. You start out just sliding a little way, straight up and down. As your confidence increases, work up to the coping. Once you have it, try hitting the wall at a slight angle, and sliding along the coping.

Shoulders parallel to your board, and stay flat on your base at all times.

The most important thing is to get the speed right: enough to reach the coping, plus a little more to ‘rock’ your weight over the top.

As your foot passes the coping, start to straighten out your front leg.
Aim to stop with the middle of your board on the coping, then lean forward to rock over the top.
Keep your shoulders parallel to the board, and your eyes on your feet.
To complete the move, do everything in reverse, riding back down fakie.
Keep your eyes on your feet, and as soon as you touch the snow, turn your head to face the direction you’re travelling.

Find a good spot: make sure the ledge you are standing on is stable and has some traction, so you don’t slip as you jump off. Also make sure the landing has a little transition to land in.
Look down and focus on the spot you’re aiming for. Visualise the take-off, drop, and landing.
Get down low, lean a little bit forward, and push equally off both feet.
Pull your feet up into your body, keeping your eyes on the landing spot at all times, and grab.
As you’re coming in towards the landing, extend legs to meet the ground, and get ready to absorb the shock of landing flat.
Land, soak up the impact, and ride away.

To the rookie park rider, rails and boxes are the scariest thing ever. But don’t worry, they aren’t half as dangerous as they look. Most snowparks have at least one small, wide box for you to build confidence on, and master the basics.
How To Snowboarding 50-50's, The 50-50 is one of the building blocks of jibbing, and describes riding along an obstacle with both feet directly over the rail. It’s usually the first thing you will try on a jib, as you are basically just riding over it.

Snowboard Trick - 50-50’s Tip :
Stay smooth and loose getting onto the rail, and keep your shoulders parallel to the rail as you slide.

The most important thing is to be balanced on the take-off, so check the run-in and kicker is flat and smooth.
Approach the obstacle with medium speed, and an “I can do this” attitude.
Keep your shoulders parallel to the board, and ride straight towards the box – no speed checking.
At the take-off, pop a small ollie, just high enough to make it onto the box.
Land on the box and focus on the end, this will help you reach it!
Relax, knees bent, and keep your shoulders parallel to the rail. This will keep you straight.
Lift your nose slightly as you ride off the end, and land centred and flat on your base.

How to Snowboard Boardslides ?,..Once you have 50-50’s wired, it’s time to turn the board around 90 degrees and start sliding that bad boy like a real snowboarder... The boardslide is actually easier to come out of fakie, so that’s what we’re doing here.

Snowboarding Trick - Boardslides Tip:
Keep the base flat and your weight centred, and you’ll be fine.

Snowboarding Trick :Boardslide To Fakie

Approach the box straight on, or slightly from the side on your heel edge – whichever feels more comfortable.
Pop a small ollie, and turn your whole body 90 degrees to face the rail.
Land on the box with your board at 90°, body facing forwards, weight centred over the box.
Look down the rail for the end, and relax your upper body.
If you turned a full 90° jumping on, as you reach the end your body will naturally want
to keep turning in the same direction.
Sliding off the rail, slide the tail around to forwards and ride out fakie.

Coming out of a boardslide forwards or backwards is controlled by your shoulders. Doing a regular boardslide is slightly more difficult: you have to keep your shoulders parallel to the box, turning more at the hip. This will help your board come away forwards again.

How To Snowboarding Frontside 360’s, Like the backside 180, the frontside 3 is a classic: a trick that you can learn early on, and spend the rest of your life trying to perfect… Done well, it’s one of the most stylish moves in the book: done badly, it’s one of the ugliest. Frontside three’s are more tricky than backside because they are a blindside rotation.

Snowboarding Trick - Frontside 360’s Tip:
When learning this trick, you may find yourself landing at 270 onto your toe edge every time. This is usually because you are opening up from the rotation too early, so stay tucked up small!

Snowboarding Trick : Frontside 360’s

Approach the kicker straight on, slowly leaning into a heelside edge as youapproach the lip.
As you reach the lip, turn your head and shoulders frontside, to begin the rotation. Pop off the heelside edge.
As you take off, quickly pull the board up into your body, grabbing your toe edge between your knees with the back hand.
As you rotate, keep looking in the direction you are going. If you feel you are spinning slowly, stay tight. If not, bone out your front leg to slow the rotation.
After 270°, start looking down between your feet to spot your landing and stall the rotation. Get ready to land.
Let go of the grab at the last possible moment, and bring your board around the last 90 degrees.
Land as flat on your base as possible, turn your head to look down the landing, and ride away.

How To Snowboarding Backside 360's, Pulling your first 360 is one of those sweet moments you’ll remember forever – now you’re a freestyler! Most riders learn the backside version first: it’s easier to initiate the rotation and spot the landing. Once you have them locked in, backside three’s feel great: some riders never feel the need to learn another move, while many pros use it as their ‘safety’ trick for the rest of their career.

Snowboard Trick - Backside 360’s Tip :
Don’t start your rotation too early, or press too hard on your toe edge as you ride up the kicker; both will cause you to drift. Instead, make a smooth, decisive turn with your shoulders as you leave the lip.

Snowboard Trick - Backside 360’s Tip :

A pproach the jump with a little more speed than you would a straight air, slightly on your heel edge.
As you ride up the kicker, switch from your heel to your toe edge.
As you take off, drop and turn your head and shoulders back towards the jump, and pop off your back foot,
While your head and leading arm are leading the rotation, drop your trailing arm, pull up your knees, and grab Indy.
Once you have completed the first 180°, you’ll already be able to see the landing.
Keep looking over your trailing shoulder to the landing.
As your board reaches 270°, release the grab, complete the rotation, and land.

I have had a chance to view this DVD twice since purchasing it last week and I'm very pleased. Unlike most - if not all - other instructional snowboarding videos on the market, Todd Richards' Trick Tips Vol. 1 does not start the viewer with how to get into your bindings, fall over properly, and make your first frontside turn. Richards and Co. thankfully skip over such basic knowledge (which most any rider would outgrow after two or three visits to the slopes anyways) and after a very brief segment on safety, jump right into park and halfpipe basics. Todd and righthand man, Billy Anderson, tackle straight airs, 50/50 rails, as well as method, mute, tail, indie, and stalefish grabs, as well as other park essentials. As for the halfpipe, Todd and Billy introduce such basics as dropping in, speed control, transitions, kick-turns, ollies, and then progress to 5 different backside grabs and 5 different frontside grabs.

I really enjoyed this video. One of the first things that caught and kept my attention was the candid, off-the-cuff humor between Todd and Billy. Laughs make learning easier, and this Todd Richards Tips 1: Snowboarding Basics DVD is no exception. The quality of the DVD was respectable as well. I own a few instructional martial arts videos which look as if they were produced by the practitioners themselves with no additional or professional help. Although you won't find any Spielbergian special effects or emotional John Williams soundtrack here, the little graphics and music that were used were modern and complemented rather than distract from the presentation of the film.

My review isn't complete without testing the taught techniques of this DVD, but being in Seattle in mid-June leaves me little to no opportunity save a lengthy trip to Mt. Hood, which probably won't happen. The good news is this video has provided me with the know-how, inspiration, and confidence to try out these techniques as soon as I hit the hill.

Todd is extremely thorough, he's not only a great rider but a great instructor. He's capable of breaking down every task to the basic movements and help the student achieve his/her goals. I also purchased other similar DVDs, one of which from Ross Power; Ross is an amazing rider but he has no idea how to teach, that Todd Richards Trick Tips Park & Pipe: Next Level DVD was junk as far as teaching methodology (you can be a great instructor without being the best rider, you can be the best rider without knowing how to teach, and Todd is both, great rider and great instructor!). Needless to say as far as teaching tool, Todd Richards Trick Tips Park & Pipe: Next LevelDVDs are the best in the market; we even used them among instructor in several snowboard schools I worked at. I hope they get re-published because there's only few left and are becoming harder and harder to find. Good job Todd, give us more DVDs like these and see ya at Jackson Hole.

Choosing a Snowboard Helmet

Very few serious snowboard injuries involve head trauma. It is usually just the high profile ones. Helmets give everyone a sense of security.

The beginner snowboarder will benefit from a snowboard helmet because it will protect the back of their head when catching an edge.
More advanced riders wear a snowboard helmet to protect against things like trees or impact when landing wrong off a jump.

When trying on a snowboard helmet, make sure it fits very snug and try on as many different models as you can. Some helmets offer more insulation than others, and you may end up wearing a thin cap under the helmet to stay warm, so if this is the case be sure to wear this when you are trying snowboard helmets on. We also suggest looking at snowboard helmets with removable earflaps and padding because they can help you regulate your temperature on cold or hot days.

Don't Take the Risk

Would you ride a bicycle in traffic or forty miles an hour down a hill without a bicycle helmet? Of course not. The statistics have proven time and again that bicycle helmets are as essential and necessary as seatbelts or airbags. Bicycle helmets are a law for riders under twelve years old.
Because snowboarding and skiing are sports done in the snow and away from other vehicle traffic, the statistics are less staggering, but should be taken as seriously. Only 15-24% of skiers and snowboarders wear helmets on the slopes, yet there are still unnecessary deaths each year.
Don't let yourself or your child fall victim to the invincibility mindset some dangerous skiers and riders have. Get a snowboard helmet.
