Is an unbelievably rich resource of information on skiing in Europe. If you are considering a trip to the Alps, and aren't certain of which resort is right for you, the guidance in this book is essential. Unlike many ski guides - - which center on the lodgings and resort - - this book is mainly about the skiing. Snow quality, lift coverage, piste maintenance, quality and expanse of the skiable terrain....it's all here. The main features of each resort are judged on a five star scale. While the book addresses the resorts as well, it does so in broad terms - - the ambience, quality of nightlife, off-slope activities. This is the book that will help you select the right resort, and take advantage of the best each resort has to offer.

Written from a British point of view, you may be surprised by the importance of things like on-mountain dining. (The authors are genuinely appalled by the predominance of soulless, industrial cafeteria type eateries at American resorts, and the near total absence of intimate mountain huts on the hill.) But, if anything, this helps underscore the differences to be enjoyed in European skiing.

Although this is mainly a guide to the incredible smorgasbord of skiing to be found in Europe, there is reasonably good coverage of the Rockies. If your familiar with Aspen or Mammoth, you can use the WTSS reviews as a point of comparison for the European resorts. For example, Mammoth rates only three star rating for scope of ski area. The largest European resorts, like Courchevel (Three Valleys) or Avoriez (Portes du Soleil) rate five stars. Read further and you'll learn the Three Valleys are much higher than Portes du Soleil, and have better, more reliable snow. Thinking about Kitzbuhel? The low altitude and two-star snow rating may prompt you to pick a higher, snowsure Austrian resort like Zurs or Obergurgl.
